Some Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be diagnosed by a doctor before seeing a therapist?

Therapy is a powerful process for self-development and personal growth. It offers individuals the chance to explore their deepest fears and anxieties and learn healthy ways to cope with their emotions and behaviour. One of the great benefits of therapy is the ability to unlearn negative patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be holding us back.

While a formal diagnosis can sometimes be helpful, it is not always necessary for successful therapy. The most important thing is that therapy helps you to become the best version of yourself. Symptoms of Mental health are not a definitive explanation of who you are but rather descriptions of the feelings that you may be experiencing.

It is important to remember that symptoms of Mental health are often caused by underlying issues from the past or a build-up of unhealthy experiences. By seeking therapy and working with a trained professional, individuals can gain a better understanding of their mental health and find healthy ways to manage their symptoms.

I have never been to talking therapy before, what is it?

Talking therapy is a wonderful form of psychological treatment where you get to talk about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours with a trained professional. It aims to help you better understand and manage your mental health, develop coping strategies, and improve your overall well-being.

How can talking therapy help?

Talking therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It can help individuals gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, and find new perspectives to address personal challenges.

In other words being able to talk about your concerns, issues, behaviours and feelings will make you better understand them and with the help of a therapist will help you think about your issues in a different way, the more you understand something then better you can deal with it.

Is everything kept confidential?

Everything we talk about during your session remains 100% CONFIDENTIAL. If I have any concerns about your health, I will always discuss this with you first and see if you would like me to contact your doctor. I myself have monthly supervision with a professional supervisor who abides by the same levels of confidentiality, and if I ever discuss any of our work, this will also remain completely anonymous.

What's the difference between counselling and therapy?

Counselling and therapy are often referred to as the same thing, however…

Counselling focuses on providing support and guidance to help individuals address specific issues or challenges they are facing. Therapy, on the other hand, is a more in-depth process aimed at addressing underlying mental health concerns and promoting long-term personal growth and well-being.

What about if I don't know what my issue is, I just feel anxious all the time?

This is not unusual and lots of people will feel this way, so you are not alone. Discovering where the issue lies is all part of the natural process and you may come to therapy thinking your issue is one thing and it’s something completely different. The great thing is therapy will help you find it!

Is there a way of knowing that I need counselling?

Recognising the need for counselling can be a deeply personal and introspective process.

Some common signs that it may be time to seek professional support include persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness that interfere with daily life, significant changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty managing stress or emotions, and a sense of being stuck or unable to move forward. If you find yourself repeatedly dwelling on the same problems without resolution, or if your relationships and work are suffering, these may be indications that counselling could be beneficial.

Ultimately, the decision to seek counselling is a highly individual one, but being attuned to changes in your mental and emotional well-being can help you determine when additional support could make a meaningful difference.

The first step is acknowledging that you may need help, which is often the hardest part.

CARL JUNG

“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.”

Conner Beaton

“Just like thoughts are the language and the information of the mind. Emotions are language and information of the body. Learning to listen and speak to both is essential for a functional and fulfilling life. “
